Chart of the week: Confidence in local police

IEP research shows a correlation between peacefulness and confidence in local police.

Peacefulness within a country is linked to confidence in the local police force, according to research from the Institute for Economics and Peace. The more peaceful a country, the more likely it is to have high levels of confidence in police.

This chart shows that over the past decade, confidence in the local police has risen in countries with high levels of peacefulness and fallen in those with low levels of peace.

In countries with very high levels of peace, confidence in the police rose from 76 to 84 per cent. Countries with medium levels of peace showed an even bigger increase in confidence, from 51 to 62 per cent.

In contrast, the correlation between confidence in the military forces and levels of peacefulness was very weak, according to the research.
