In this session we will be joined by Steve Killelea AM, to discuss his debut book, Peace in the Age of Chaos: The Best Solution for a Sustainable Future.

Humanity has been studying peace since the 7th century, yet the world is less peaceful now than even 10 years ago. What has happened? Why is the world becoming more chaotic, not less? From the winner of the Luxembourg Peace Prize and Founder of the world-renowned think tank, the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), comes a compelling new look at the factors that create highly peaceful societies – and how we can sustain them at a time of unprecedented environmental, social, economic and technological change.

Through thought-provoking anecdotes and data-driven insights, Steve Killelea, shares his personal journey to study, understand and measure peace, including how and why he came to create the Global Peace Index, the world’s only quantitative measure of peace and its economic value. One of Australia’s leading philanthropists, whose humanitarian aid projects has taken him to some of the most violent places on earth, Steve’s funding and thought leadership behind the Institute has seen him recognised as one of the World’s 100 Most Influential People on reducing the onset of armed violence by the UK group Action on Armed Violence.

Join us for a conversation with Steve about his commitment to creating a paradigm shift in the way the world thinks about peace; the economic cost of conflict and violence; and where to from here in an age of unprecedented global change.

The ‘laws and impact of war’ book club is a partnership between Readings and the Victorian International Humanitarian Law Advisory Committee of the Australian Red Cross.

International humanitarian law (IHL), also known as the laws of war, is the body of law that applies during war to protect those who are not, or who are no longer participating in hostilities, and that seeks to limit the means and methods of warfare.
