World Interfaith Harmony Week

Now in its fourth year, the World Interfaith Harmony Week, established by a UN resolution in 2010, promotes peaceful interactions between people of different faiths. The UN believes that there is an urgent “need for dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation among people.”

There are a variety of events planned across the world, as part of Interfaith Harmony Week, including dances, talks and festivals, which are listed on the official site.

For thousands of years, conflicts across the globe have been started and fuelled by opposing religions disagreeing with, oppressing and not tolerating other views. To this day, wars and atrocities are committed in the name of religion. Unfortunately, the actions of a few extremists can harm the peaceful majority.

In keeping with the spirit of World Interfaith Harmony Week is Religions for Peacean organisation which has been active since 1970, seeking to promote a world in which religious communities cooperate effectively for peace, by taking concrete common action. The organisation stemmed from the concept of a ‘religious summit’, discussed by leaders of major faiths in the early 60s. Much like the UN event, its goal is to create unity and peace among different religions and across the world in general. It also believes that the social structures within religions can be powerful tools for promoting peace and harmony.

Just like the Institute for Economics and Peace, Religions for Peace believes that Peace is Positive. Dr William Vendley, Secretary-General of Religions for Peace recently stated:” Peace is positive. For Religions for Peace, Peace has always been “more” than the absence of war or violence.”
