The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes (including the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature) that is awarded annually to those who have "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." The Nobel Prizes were created by Swedish industrialist, inventor, and armaments manufacturer Alfred Nobel, who in 1895 singed his last will and testament to giving the largest share of his fortune to this series of prizes.
This year there were a record 259 nominations received for the Peace Prize. Speaking about the nominations, Norwegian Nobel Committee's non-voting secretary Geir Lundestad said "this year's nominations come from all over the world ... well-known names, well-known presidents and prime ministers and also lesser well-known names working in humanitarian projects, human rights activists."
Last year, the Norwegian Nobel committee put aside the economic crisis and awarded the habitually divisive Nobel peace prize to the European Union for its decades-long histicial role in promoting reconciliation and peace.
