2011 Democracy Index
  • 10TH JAN 2012

2011 saw important changes in democracy, both in the direction of unexpected democratisation and a continuation of decline in democracy in some parts of the world

Democracy Index 2011

The results of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index 2011 show that democracy has been under intense pressure in many parts of the world. In most regions the average democracy score for 2011 is lower than in 2010, including the developed countries of North America and Western Europe. There was a decline in the average score for Eastern Europe and small declines for both Asia and Latin America. These were offset by increase in average scores in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the global state of democracy, and points out that in many regions it has been worsening over the past five years. The report features:

  • a snapshot of the state of democracy for 165 independent nations and two territories, with comparisons against 2010
  • key developments in 2011 which contributed to changes in democratisation
  • regional analysis of trends in democracy in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia
  • and the Americas
  • an analysis of a new wave of democracy in the Middle East and North Africa
