Number of Deaths from Organised Conflict (External) is one of the 23 indicators of peace measured by the Global Peace Index. It is an 'external' indicator of peace, meaning it measures peace outside a country.
Number of Deaths from Organised Conflict (External) is a quantitative assessment of the number of fatalities occurring as a direct result of armed conflict between the government of a state and at least one another party external to the country. The conflict must be over either control of government or territory.
Number of Deaths from Organised Conflict (External) is scored on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being the least and 5 the most.
In countries that score 1, there were between 0-23 battle-related deaths from external organised conflict.
In countries that score 5, there were 10,000 or more battle-related deaths from external organised conflict.
Deaths from Conflict (External) is a quantitative assessment from the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset, a joint project between the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University and the Centre for the Study of Civil War at the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo (PRIO).
The Global Peace Index is comprised of 23 indicators that measure the existence or absence of violence or the fear of violence. These include:
Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict
Societal safety and security
